Preys-World - ActiBlizzard invents another money printing machine
Thursday 12th of February, 2009 - 19:25:50 GMT
In total contrast to Eidos’s scramble for safety and Midway’s woes, the Actiblizzard merger raised their already large profits by 558% year on year from 2007 to last year.
The merged firm amassed USD 429million for the Christmas quarter alone and was also boosted by Thanksgiving weekend. These holidays gave ActiBlizzard's business year-end in America a profitable boost, greatly helped by WoW Lich King’s big Christmas surge to become the top add-on in America, where it’s counted as a full game in their charts.
Underlining the core belief at PW that it’s stupid to politicize the formats and lose yourself money, the total operating revenue for the firm came in at USD 5 billion, with income up 20%. Both Call of Duty 4 and World At War (see why we call it Cash on Delivery now?) overlapped and almost complimented each other on every platform where they were released, rather than Modern Warfare getting left behind.
In addition, the average price of the Guitar Hero games and external add-ons and song compilation packs also helped secure the revenue to carry on pay royalties to several rock legends. Clearly, cash-strapped consumers, whether casual or hardcore gamers, opted for home entertainment when the recession hit its worst pre-election troughs.
Rather than resting on its laurels, ActiBlizzard CEO Bobby Kotick also announced that original IPs would continue to be released this year (as of Q1 for Europe if it’s February now), no doubt financially backed up by the near-bottomless marquee franchises. We await those new games with interest and it’s good to see the firm not sitting around expecting cash from the big three brands forever. When those new IPs are announced, we'll bring you the news.
