Cryostasis - Russian FPS with Bioshock overtones, due October
Monday 28th of July, 2008 - 15:01:55 GMT
Sleep of Reason is the totally pointless subtitle for this game, and we're not using it because Cryostasis is an excellent main title in its own right.
The game boasts the folllowing standout features;
* Unique “Mental Echo” ability providing the player the chance to change the outcome of a character’s past
* Levels based on a real Russian ice-breaker
* Historically-authentic weapons
* Completely new physics and weather system with realistic ice, frost and snow with advanced character/object physics
* Unified dynamic shadowing system – fully dynamic, moving light sources, casting shadows on all objects
Despite the above, it's really the newly innovative health system which makes the game attractive to us. You have to keep your body temperature at optimal levels to avoid hypothermia and death, rather than having an assigned number, percentage or visible bar beyond that of a standard thermometer.
The Bioshock comparison came from the devs themselves and accompanying PR agent. Whilst the Ice Breaker setting won't be as pretty as BioShock, you'll still have to get through the structure to piece together the disaster's cause and be able to escape. That's another reminder of 2K Games' BAFTA winner. The game is presently without a publisher so we will update our listing when this changes, including whether the game will receive a Steam release.
If you like the look of it as much as we do then head over to Eurogamer's expansive preview here and discuss in the forum thread here.
