Grand Theft Auto IV - smashes and grabs an armful of praise on release

Tuesday 29th of April, 2008 - 00:22:24 GMT

Platforms:

  • Playstation 3
  • Windows
  • XBOX 360

An hour has now passed with GTA officially available to the British public, and the Preys-World forum has closed its two year, 150-page-long anticipation thread and opened up the spoiler-free thread for the launch which has collected some early review scores. The difference is, unlike Bioshock, many more gamers are inclined to agree with these high scores and the almost-guaranteed BAFTAs next year.

Pre-order demand is causing the big two online shops to creak under the demand. Play.com has covered itself by declaring both versions of just the game, sold out.

Amazon hasn't given GTA IV a shop tab like Play, perhaps due to a recent redesign. However it has created a magazine-style site within the shop detailing the history and giving stock updates. It's interesting that stock is declared as sold out for the PS3 until Wednesday 7th May but stocks for 360 are expected to arrive again on Friday 2nd May.

As such, the people braving the weather to go out to GAME, if they don't have a pre-order, stood some of the best chance of getting a copy as the clock struck midnight.

The Guardian's collected launch content is also online, repeating some of the projections to the media last Friday.
